Can I repair something after a 220/120 voltage mishap?

I have an expensive 120v massage chair that I just moved to Korea, which is 220v. I had hooked it up using a large transformer several times, without problem. However, my large transformer was in dispose in another spot, and I used a smaller travel transformer instead this time. Well, I must have plugged it in with the polarity flipped or something, because all I got was a large POP, and the chair no longer works (it does not turn on.) Is it possible to get an electrician to fix the chair still? It is worth a lot of money so the cost of repair would be worth it.

Step down transformers will reduce the voltage from your source but will also increase the current by the same factor. Power remains constant through a transformer and P= V*I. If your travel transformer does not have circuitry to compensate for the increased voltage, it is possible that you blew a fuse in the chair (assuming it had protective circuitry). A fuse is generally a fairly easy thing to replace, as they are designed to burn out. However, if your chair does not have a fuse it is possible that you burned through a portion of the chair's circuit board or burned out a component somewhere in the board which will make the repair more difficult.

If you have an electrician you trust, it would be worth your time to get him to inspect it. If not, your best bet may be to call the manufacturer of the chair and ask if you can purchase replacement electronics.
